The Magic Lagoon - Subic Bay

Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Philippines

Can you spot the magic?

The first time we went to the Magic Lagoon Restaurant and Bar here in Subic I was impressed. A parking lot very near to the big connection road did not look like the entrance to an oasis of peace. Upon entering, one could already hear the geese welcoming the visitors. A long path leads to an outside, covered, restaurant/bar. The place is situated beside a reasonable lake.

That first time we went there early afternoon was to fish. (One of the possibilities the place offers) You can rent a fishing rod. The fish you catch is then weighed then paid. No, nothing comes for free but that is okay because I guess the restaurant staff takes care of the fish, keeping the lake clean, and feeding the fish.

As you might expect already, the place is huge. My friend told me he often went there to work on his laptop in this quiet and peaceful place. Also, the place offers nice spaces to take pictures. Prices for drinks are very reasonable.

We went to relax a few more times but no more fishing for me. It is too much of an effort and messy business anyway. However, to just get away from the city noise, the Magic Lagoon is a perfect place.

The Magic Lagoon Restaurant - Food Dude's Review

Lately, after spending some time with a friend and her toddler son, we decided to have dinner together. Someone mentioned this place and the decision was made quickly.

It was already dusk and the place really had something magical. We picked a table and made our choice from the menu. To tell you upfront - it was a great disappointment.

Why is that? First, everything was served cold. How can a Grilled Squid be served cold? Apart from that, the Pinakbet tasted a bit salty and our friend was not satisfied with the Crispy Pata as well. And honestly, when it was served all looked so very appetizing! Looks can be deceiving.

The Magic Lagoon Pinakbet
Pinakbet was cooked right but it was a bit salty and served cold.

Magic Lagoon Squid
The squid was almost perfect - not so gummy but again, it was served cold.
As nice as the place looks and as good as it is to get away from daily life, the food really was not something to write home about.

Things To Do at The Magic Lagoon

Fishing - One of my favorite activities when visiting this restaurant. Entrance Fee is Php100 pesos with free fishing rod and bait. A catch of milkfish per kilo costs Php 250 and Tilapia for Php 150. Have them grill your catch, then add Php 100 pesos.

Visit the Subic Bay Volunteer's Shrine - This shrine was built to honor the volunteerism of over 8,000 former workers of the US Naval Base. They helped to create the transformation of this military base into a buzzing Special Economic Zone (SBFZ). Their names can be found inscribed at the shrine.

Take Instagrammable Photos - Fond of Instagram? There are spots suitable for photo ops around the vicinity.

Test Your Patience - This sounds funny but this lady went here to fish and to test her patience. She was sitting there for hours without a catch!

Watch the Waterfowl Dwellers - These beautiful but noisy creatures roam the area; domesticated but will chase when they're disturbed.

Get Boozed - You read it right! They have alcoholic beverages so gather your friends for a chill. It is open 24/7!
