A Waterfall Experience in Morong Bataan

The town of Morong in Bataan boasts so many waterfalls that an outdoor lover would love to visit; thanks to its mountainous terrain where most parts are forested and protected by the Department of  Environment and Natural Resources. Eco-tourism has been on the upswing and became a source of income of the town aside from fishing, farming, and selling products in Olongapo City and nearby municipalities.

Laplap Falls (Reysam Falls)

One summer day in June 2017, we visited Laplap Falls (Reysam Falls) in Bataan after a tour in Nagbalayong Beach, Bakas Higante, and Batis Falls in Morong. Laplap Falls is located in the northwestern part of town close to Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

It was crowded when we arrived in the area. Several family groups gathered together enjoying the cold waters of the waterfalls. They had a picnic along the bank with a wooden table and chairs  (the only one in the area so far).

Approximately 20 feet high and 9 feet deep, anyone can jump in the water but diving isn't advisable. Tree roots at the right bank of the waterfall and the shady trees in the area add up to the feeling of being close to nature.

These three-tiered waterfalls flow year-round, (A typical characteristic of all the waterfalls in Morong). The water torrent in the summer months may not be as strong as in the rainy season but regardless, paying a visit will be worthwhile.

Getting There:

By Private Vehicle: From Manila, take North Luzon Expressway all the way to SCTEX Tipo Exit. You will pass Subic Bay Freeport Zone Security Plaza and Holy Land Subic Sanctuary. At the end of Tipo Expressway, take Maritan Highway and Argonaut Highway all the way to Corregidor Highway. Exit at Morong Gate and stop at Barangay Mabayo. There is a tricycle terminal where you can ask for a guide.

By Public Vehicle: From Manila: Take a Victory or Saulog Bus bound to Olongapo City. From Olongapo City, take a yellow jeep and stop at SBMA Gate 1 (landmark is SM Mall). You have to enter the Freeport and take a jeepney or minibus bound to Morong, Bataan (terminal before Mini Stop). Stop at Barangay Mabayo Tricycle Terminal and ask for a guide.

Leave No Traces, please.

On our 2018 visit, we were unhappy to see the surroundings littered by ignorant tourists. Plastic, bottles, and leftover food were scattered under the table. A foul smell wrinkled our noses as we passed by the area. I hope future tourists of these waterfalls will not do the same or else the natural beauty of the area will come to an end.

Our guide, Mr. Ben Samonte promised us to look after this issue by notifying the authorities. If by chance you're going to visit this waterfall, you can reach him at 09166621914.
